Azerbaijan has been a member of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) since the 29th of September 2001. Azerbaijan has joined UNWT`'s Global Leaders for Tourism campaign and the “One Billion Tourists: One Billion Opportunities” initiative. UNWTO, in turn, provided technical assistance in drafting the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Tourism.
On 8-14 October 2011, the representative of Azerbaijan was elected Vice-President of the 19th session of the UNWTO in Gyeongju, South Korea.
At the 20th meeting of the UNWTO General Assembly in 2013, Azerbaijan was elected a member of the Executive Board of the Organisation for 2013-2017. During the 104th session of the Executive Council, Azerbaijan was elected Chairman of the Executive Board of the Organisation for 2017. During the 22nd session of the General Assembly, Azerbaijan was re-elected to the Executive Council for 2018. At the 64th meeting of the UNWTO Regional Commission for Europe, Azerbaijan was elected a member of the Committee on Consideration of Associative Membership Applications of the World Tourism Organisation for 2019-2021.
The 110th session of the Executive Board of the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) was held in Baku on 16-18 June 2019. The event was attended by high-level representatives in the field of tourism from 37 countries and a number of international organisations.
