On 22 September 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov chaired the 15th Joint Ministerial Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Member States of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) within the framework of his participation in the high-level week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

During his opening speech at the Meeting, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance of continuing the reform process launched in ECO several years ago in a manner that meets the needs of the member states and contemporary requirements, as well as strengthening partnership with relevant regional organizations.

The Minister also stated that our country, as a side interested in expanding cooperation with ASEAN and its member states, acted as a co-sponsor of the Resolution entitled “Cooperation between the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations,” adopted during the respective 63rd and 75th sessions of the UN General Assembly in 2008 and 2020. In this regard, he stated that the holding of the ECO-ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ meeting precisely during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of ECO is a manifestation of the importance our country attaches to the aforementioned organizations.

It was noted that the theme of Azerbaijan’s 2023 chairmanship of ECO, “Green transition and connectivity,” reflects a common regional vision on broader regional connectivity, economic transformation, green energy and resilience to climate change, and that the issue of regional connectivity is of particular importance for Azerbaijan and other landlocked member states.
