On 13 September 2023, within the framework of the working visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov to the Swiss Confederation, roundtable discussions were organized jointly with the Global Studies Institute of the University of Geneva on “Regional security and Azerbaijan’s cooperation with Central Asian countries.”
At the discussions, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov delivered a speech on our country’s foreign policy priorities, prospects for relations with neighboring countries, existing regional security issues, challenges and opportunities.
Speaking about the interconnectedness of the South Caucasus and Central Asian regions, including the regional processes taking place, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that, in recent times, intensification has been observed in the development of relations both on a bilateral basis, including within the framework of multilateral platforms. It was emphasized that there are prospects for regional cooperation in the fields of economy, energy security, transport, connectivity and others, and that, especially in a context where the importance of the Trans-Caspian International East-West Middle Corridor is increasing, it is important to consider opportunities for cooperation in this field.
Speaking about regional security issues, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that Armenia’s conduct, which endangers the existing fragile normalization and peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia, is a threat to stability in the region. In this regard, it was emphasized that, most recently, on the one hand, the voicing of groundless allegations regarding the alleged existence of a “tense humanitarian situation” and “blockade” in the region in connection with the situation around the Lachin road, and, on the other hand, the rejection of Azerbaijan’s proposals on the simultaneous use of the Aghdam-Khankendi and Lachin roads to meet the needs of residents of Armenian origin living in the Garabagh region, are only one of the examples of this country’s mutually contradictory steps.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also stated that, despite the statement made by the Prime Minister of Armenia on the recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, his voicing of contradictory statements promoting separatism in our territories is not only incomprehensible, but also calls into question the future of the peace process.
In this regard, the importance of the proper understanding by the international community of the processes taking place in the region and the regional situation, as well as the condemnation of Armenia’s unstable conduct that deals a blow to the peace process, was emphasized.
Thereafter, the discussions continued with a question-and-answer session.
