No:192/23, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Head of the Council of Europe Office in Baku Petr Sich

On 4 April 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with Head of the Council of Europe (CoE) Office in Baku Petr Sich.
At the meeting, issues on the existing cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the CoE, including the current situation in the region, were discussed.
During the meeting, reference was made to the existence of a broad cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and the CoE, and in this regard, the importance of the adopted Action Plans, including the Action Plan for 2022-2025, in the development of relations was highlighted. It was noted that the harmonization of national legislation with international legislation and numerous reforms carried out towards ensuring the rule of law are the results of the existing cooperation between Azerbaijan and the CoE.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed the other side in detail about the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, the large-scale restoration and reconstruction works carried out by Azerbaijan in the liberated territories, the opening of transport and communications in the region, and the steps taken by Azerbaijan towards the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It was stressed that the Armenian side’s evasion of its obligations, its failure to withdraw its armed forces from the territories of Azerbaijan, and its use of the Lachin road, which is used only for humanitarian purposes, for the transportation of Azerbaijan’s natural resources, as well as for the continuation of the mine threat, are obstacles to the establishment of peace and security in the region. It was emphasized that the claims of a “humanitarian crisis” and “blockade,” aimed at undermining the action of representatives of Azerbaijani civil society protesting against such illegal activities of Armenia around the Lachin road and misleading the international community, do not reflect the truth.
Head of the CoE Office in Baku Petr Sich noted that cooperation between Azerbaijan and the CoE continues successfully on the basis of mutual understanding and trust. Petr Sich emphasized the importance of mutual visits and contacts in the development of relations.
At the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
