No:113/23, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi

On 3 March 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, who was on a visit to our country within the framework of the Summit of the Contact Group of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on the fight against COVID-19.
During the meeting, cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Agency, as well as issues of nuclear safety and safeguards, and the current situation in the region were discussed.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that joint programs have been implemented for many years in a number of areas within the mandate of the Agency, expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation in the fields of agriculture, petrochemical industry, medicine and other areas, and emphasized that there are broad prospects in a number of other directions as well.
During the meeting, the Minister also noted that Azerbaijan attaches great importance to ensuring nuclear safety, and in this regard, emphasized the importance of complying with the safety standards established by the IAEA during the operation of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, where outdated technologies are used by Armenia.
Director General Grossi noted that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the IAEA, emphasized with satisfaction the joint projects carried out, and stated that there are prospects for deepening cooperation with Azerbaijan in the fields of nuclear safety and other areas in which the Agency specializes.
At the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
