On 28 February 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov received the delegation headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov within the framework of his official visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
A tête-à-tête meeting was held between Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Minister Sergey Lavrov, and then continued in an expanded format with the participation of the delegations of both sides.
At the expanded meeting, current issues on the existing bilateral and multilateral cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and Russia, as well as the current situation in the region, were discussed.
Speaking about the existence of an effective cooperation agenda between Azerbaijan and Russia in various fields, including political, economic, trade, transport, transit, cultural, humanitarian, education and other areas, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov noted in this regard the importance of the existing political dialogue and mutual visits between the two countries in the development of relations.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, who provided the other side with detailed information about the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period and Azerbaijan’s peace and reconstruction efforts towards the implementation of the trilateral statements signed in the direction of establishing peace and security in the region, stated that in the normalization of relations between the two states and the signing of the peace treaty, Azerbaijan continuously faces Armenia’s non-constructive position, including provocations undermining the peace agenda.
As another example of Armenia’s violation of the provisions of the Trilateral Statement dated 10 November 2020, it was once again pointed out that the abuse of the Lachin road, which is intended to be used only for humanitarian purposes, caused the rightful protest of Azerbaijan’s civil society. It was stated that despite the continuous provocations of the Armenian side, Azerbaijan will spare no efforts to ensure that the said protest action has no negative humanitarian consequences, including to advance the peace agenda.
Minister Sergey Lavrov recalled that his official visit this year coincides with the first anniversary of the signing of the Declaration on Allied Interaction between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation, signed on 22 February of last year, which played a significant role in the development of relations between our countries. In this regard, the importance of the existing treaty-legal framework in the development of relations between the two countries in various fields was noted. The importance of fulfilling the obligations arising from the Trilateral Statement dated 10 November 2020 and the agreements reached between the leaders towards ensuring peace and stability in the South Caucasus was emphasized.
At the press briefing held afterwards, the Ministers made statements on the results of the meeting and answered journalists’ questions.
