On 2 October 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov received Edgars Skuja, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Ambassador Edgars Skuja first presented a copy of his credentials to Minister Jeyhun Bayramov.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov congratulated Ambassador Edgars Skuja on his appointment and wished him success in his future activities.
During the meeting, issues of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Latvia, as well as the current regional situation, were discussed.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov spoke with satisfaction about the development of the existing relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia as a result of the signing and implementation of the “Joint Declaration on the Establishment of Strategic Partnership” in 2017, and in this regard, noted that political dialogue, mutual visits and contacts between the two countries give impetus to the further expansion of relations.
It was emphasized that during the next year, when the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia will be marked, it is also important to strengthen activities for the development of cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including political, economic, energy security, trade, transport, humanitarian and other areas.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov provided the other side with detailed information about the nearly 30-year occupation of our territories, the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period, the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as our country’s peace and construction efforts.
It was stated that illegal Armenian armed forces remaining from the 30-year occupation period were withdrawn from the region as a result of the anti-terror measures carried out by Azerbaijan, and that their disarmament process is currently being completed.
It was stated that ending the presence of illegal Armenian armed forces, in turn, created opportunities both for the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and for advancing the reintegration process with Armenian residents living in the Garabagh region, and in this regard, Azerbaijan is determined to strengthen its efforts in both directions.
Ambassador Edgars Skuja thanked for the sincere reception and stated that during his tenure, he would spare no efforts towards the further development of relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia.
During the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
