No:522/23, Press release on the meeting of Minister Jeyhun Bayramov with Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit

On 20 September 2023, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Ahmed Aboul Gheit within the framework of the high-level week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
During the meeting, issues of Azerbaijan’s cooperation within the framework of the LAS, as well as with Arab countries on an individual basis, and the current situation in the region were discussed.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov spoke about the importance we attach to cooperation with the countries of the Arab world, with which we share many historical and cultural similarities, including within the framework of the LAS, and stated that there are prospects for cooperation in many areas, including economy, investments, agriculture, connectivity and others. In particular, the further expansion of our relations with a number of LAS member states during our chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement was noted with satisfaction.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also provided the other side with detailed information about the current situation in the region in the post-conflict period and the restoration and construction works carried out by Azerbaijan in the liberated territories. Noting the normalization and peace process initiated by Azerbaijan immediately after the end of the war in 2020, as well as the existing challenges and difficulties, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that in this regard, the presence of illegal Armenian armed forces in our territories, which was one of the greatest threats to security in the region, was ended as a result of the anti-terror measures carried out by our side. It was stated that this threat to our territorial integrity and sovereignty also seriously obstructed the advancement of the reintegration process with residents of Armenian origin living in the Garabagh region. It was stated that our side will continue to take practical steps to promote the normalization agenda with Armenia on a bilateral basis, as well as the reintegration of Armenian residents into our society at the national level.
Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit recalled his visit to our country last year within the framework of the Global Baku Forum and his meeting with our head of state, and stated that such contacts are important in discussing the prospects for the development of relations. It was emphasized that Azerbaijan’s efforts towards peace and construction in the region are commendable, and in this regard, it is important to continue work in the field of building sustainable peace in the region.
During the meeting, an exchange of views was also conducted on other issues of mutual interest.
