No: 294/26 Press Release on the Election of the Candidate of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Membership of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for the 2027-2030 Term

On 26 June, within the framework of the 24th Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, held in New York, the candidate of the Republic of Azerbaijan was elected to membership of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) for the 2027-2030 term.
In elections held amid fierce competition, candidates from 20 countries, together with Azerbaijan, competed for the 12 vacant seats on the Committee. Elgun Safarov, a representative of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, whose candidacy was put forward by the Republic of Azerbaijan, was elected to the Committee in the first round of voting.
The UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women is the principal treaty body overseeing the implementation of the 1979 Convention. Comprising 23 independent experts elected on a global basis, the Committee reviews the fulfilment of obligations by the States parties to the Convention.
It should be recalled that, alongside the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), over the past two weeks, Azerbaijani representatives who were candidates in the elections held to the Human Rights Committee (ICCPR) and the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC), which are among the UN human rights treaty bodies, achieved a maximum result by being elected to all three committees.
In addition, in line with the results of elections held in previous years, our country is represented on the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) and the Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW).
These electoral successes, by creating the opportunity for Azerbaijani representatives to be represented on 5 of the 10 existing UN human rights treaty bodies, mean that, in terms of representation on treaty bodies, our country shares second and third place among all UN member states with the People's Republic of China. This is once again a clear example of our country's growing international standing and of the trust placed in Azerbaijan by the international community.
