On 26 May 2023, a meeting was held between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov and Alexandre Zouev, Assistant Secretary-General for Rule of Law and Security Institutions of the UN.

During the meeting, satisfaction was expressed with Azerbaijan’s activities within the framework of the UN, and the large-scale initiatives of our country in a number of areas within the framework of the UN, especially in the field of supporting peace and security, including the participation of our peacekeepers in various missions, were highly appreciated.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, stating that our country attaches special importance to cooperation with the United Nations (UN) and its specialized agencies, stated in this regard that Azerbaijan cooperates closely as a donor country. The sides also conducted an exchange of views on the latest situation in the region in the post-conflict period.

It was noted that despite the fact that the territories of Azerbaijan were under the occupation of Armenia for nearly 30 years, nearly one million Azerbaijanis were displaced from their native lands, and the occupation had devastating effects on Azerbaijan’s socio-economic welfare, our country overcame difficulties and turned from an aid-receiving country into a donor country. Detailed information was provided about our country’s donor activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and its contributions to the fight against the global pandemic. The assistance provided by the Republic of Azerbaijan to many countries in the fields of healthcare, education, technical and humanitarian support was highlighted.

The Minister then informed the other side about the demining process in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories, the fact that Azerbaijani citizens have become victims of mines planted en masse by Armenia, and Armenia’s failure to cooperate with Azerbaijan in the field of demining. Also, informing the other side about restoration and reconstruction works in the liberated territories and the return of internally displaced persons to the region, the Minister emphasized the importance of increasing international efforts towards eliminating the mine threat in our territories.

Thanking for the detailed information, Alexandre Zouev noted that he witnessed large-scale construction works being carried out in our country in a short period of time, the economy continuously developing, security issues being successfully resolved in Azerbaijan, and law enforcement, including police bodies, duly fulfilling the duties assigned to them in this direction. The UN representative extended his congratulations to our country on holding an important international humanitarian conference on “Combating Mine Threat - The Path to Sustainable Development.”

The sides also conducted an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
